A Saga of Ruins

The sagacious kind said, “Gracious girls! Please forgive me.”

“O King! Please don’t seek forgiveness from us. Rather express your regret to our Gurudev, who is our only savior. By rendering a few words of regret to our Gurudev, his benediction will bless your regime with wealth and prosperity. A conflict between the power of state and the power of Dharma brings the intentions of evildoers to fruition; on the contrary, when there is mutual harmony between these two, the evildoers are so demoralized that they find themselves at their wit’s end. Maharaj! Please try to develop and healthy dialogue with our revered ‘Gurudev’ so that the state is blessed by the power of Dharma and the Dharma in turn gains protection by the power of Sate.”

The king was greatly overwhelmed by the farsightedness of the girls. By living in the sacred vicinity of saints, the girls were blessed with the beneficent feelings not only for themselves or for the ashram but also for the entire State and the humanity.

“My heartfelt reverence to both of you and your adorable Guru, saint Daduji also.”

King Mansinh begged pardon from the revered sage. Daduji said, “Dear King! You’re not at fault. The present eon is ‘Kaliyuga’ and the proselytizers want the Hindus to fightamongst themselves. They wish to develop aversion for Hinduism so that their task gains can rule over us. Henceforth O King! Be careful and vigilant! Don’t get entrapped in their insidious machinations.”

The king told the Brahmins, “I, myself have visited the saint. Your allegations against Him are baseless.”

The Brahmins thought that Daduji Maharaj must have cast a magical spell on Mansinh.

The proselytizers and the orthodox Brahmins found all their weapons fail but they had the power of money and were not prepared to give in. Dadu’s opponents said, ‘We wanted the State to protect Dharma, but the state is not coming to our rescue and is siding with Dadu Dindayal. When the king is siding with saints, not with us, how will Dharma be saved and where will the people go? We will commit self-immolation. That is the only answer.”

Diabolic men and their proponents keep on giving such thereat. If the ruler were to give in to such threats, there would be chaos in society. The king thought, ‘if they execute their threat and a couple of fools char themselves to death not only they would become ghosts, but, if I give in to the threat, they will misguide my people like anything.’

The king held consultations with his ministers. He put his soldiers on guard and asked them to keep strict vigil on people who could immolate themselves in order to cause agitation. Nobody committed self-immolation but after a few months, Dadu’s detractors voltage campaign against Dadu Dindayalji and created an impression in people’s minds that the king was giving undue favour to Dadu Dandayalji.

The king was in a dilemma. ‘He thought, ‘Whom should I support, the saint or his detractors?”

The king took the middle course. He thought, ‘There will be some peace if the saint leaves this place for a few days,’ the king came to Dadu Dindayaliji and said, “Sir! How long have you been here at Aamer?”

“For fourteen years.”
“Sir! Aren’t you bored staying here for all these years?”

Dadu Dindayalji thought, ‘The king wants me to leave the place.’

He said, “I know no boredom but I am leaving right now.”

“No sir! I didn’t mean this. Please do stay here in my kingdom. Please don’t take it seriously,” the king left after flattering the saint.

Dadu Dindayalji could clearly read the king’s mind. He said to his disciples, “We will leave this place.”

At night he heard the inner voice, ‘Dadu Dindayal! I can destroy your persecutors! I can ruin this kingdom! They are tormenting my devotee! I can bear my own insult but not that of my devotee. Don’t leave this place. I will take on these people and destroy them.’

And why not? God is omnipotent.

Daduji said, ‘Lord! Have mercy! May it not be so! Lord! You are merciful! You are an ocean of mercy! Be kind to them. Let them live!’

And finally Dadu Dindayalji did leave, but the Lord couldn’t tolerate it. The king had a dream early in the morning. He saw that his kingdom and his family line were destroyed.

King Mansingh thought, ‘A dream seen early in the morning comes true.’

Enquiries were made and it was found that Dadu dindayalji had left the Ashram. The king set out to search of the saint. In the morning, the king caught up with Dadu Dindayalji in the hilly terrain and threw himself prostrate before the saint and his devotees. The king said, “Your Holiness! I had a dream early morning that you have forsaken my kingdom. I made enquiries and have rushed forth to meet you. Sir! One forsaken by a saint does certainly come to grief. I have mistreated you. I am guilty. Forgive me and come back to my kingdom.”

Dadu Dindayalji said, “Now I will not come back. But I have already prayed to God that your kingdom should not be destroyed.”

“No sir! Be king and come back otherwise my name will be painted in black in the annals of history. Both myself and my subjects will suffer evil consequences.”

I will pray to God and propitiate Him. This is my promise.”

Dadu Dindayalji sent King Mansingh back and prayed to God. The prayer was answered, ‘O saint! On your request, Aamer will not be destroyed for one hundred years but after that, it will be in ruins.’

Today if you go to Aamer, you will find it in ruins. It is not the capital of the State for a hundred years Aamer was protected because the saint had lived there for fourteen years. At that time those who were persecuting the saint didn’t think of the disastrous consequences their deeds were to bring for future generations. What do saints and devotees have to gain or to lose? But the adherents of a devotee or a saint bring tremendous good to the town, state or the country and those who malign them bring great harm to humanity. And in the process, they themselves are ruined.

Nourish one another. Let us help one another; let us share one another’s joys and sorrows; let us wipe one another’s tea4rs. Why should we do the ghastly act of injuring one another? This thing is causing misery to people in the western world. Why should we invite that burning problem to our country? Don’t be a puppet in the hands of forces that are driving humanity into the fire of strife and unrest. Instead, work hand in hand with the saints and their devotees who are by their very nature taking humanity to divinity. This will bring you supreme good.

Mansingh’s clan survived for two to three generations; his kingdom at Aamer near Jaipur survived for a hundred years. But if you go there now, you will find it in ruins. Those who trouble the saints in effect harm the people, but if people are intelligent and are equipped with Bhakti, they despise the slanderers of saints and devotees.
