Hazrat Mohammed came to know that one of his visitors was in the habit of slandering. He called that person and gave him a pillow made out of soft feathers and said, “Scatter these feathers in every house.” The man set out with great enthusiasm. He kept one feather in each house while also slandering somebody or the other.
The next evening the prophet told him, “Now collect all the feathers.” The man asked, “How can that be possible now? All the feathers must have been blown off by now.” The prophet said, “Same is the case with the irresponsible words which you speak wherever you go; they too cannot be retrieved as they are blown here and there. You gain nothing by that, rather you lose your life energy and those who listen to it are also ruined.”
