The Need for a Guru

The treasure of Knowledge is hidden in each and every man. That is to say the Being of Guru is present in every man. The Guru is required so as to reveal it. To acquire knowledge of any subject, the Guru (master) of that subject is required. If one wants to become a doctor, a lawyer, a scholar or a thief, one has to go to an expert doctor, lawyer, scholar or thief respectively and seek the knowledge of that particular faculty. How then can one attain the Knowledge of the Supreme Being, the Existence-Knowledge-Bliss Absolute, the treasure trove of real joy, without the help of a Guru?

Why does one need a perfected being in flesh and blood as a Guru for Self-realization? One should first get convinced of the fact that perfected beings-true saints or Satgurus-are manifestations of the Lord Himself. There is no difference between the Lord and a true Satguru. The ego is the only veil separating man form God. True saints destroy this veil and become one with God as a river becomes one with an ocean.

Because of his physical limitations, man is verily incapable of having a vision of the non-physical Being of God. He can approach God only if God assumes a human form and meets him at the physical plane. The merciful Lord does exactly the same for the deliverance of man. He assumes human form and comes to the world. This human form of God has been named the Guru. That is to stay Guru is God in human form. God awakens the Jivas through His human form and through His grace makes them one with His own Self. Diksha is the means of liberation.

We should find a Guru, who is endowed with Knowledge and dispassion. If one is to define Saguna (The Supreme Absolute conceived of as a person endowed with attributes like mercy, omnipotence, omniscience, omnipresence, etc.) and Nirguna (The impersonal, attributeless Absolute beyond all description or designation) Bhakti, one would say that a Brahmanishtha saint having Knowledge, dispassion, forgiveness, right discipline, thoughtfulness, contentment and like attributes is the Saguna Brahman. Surrending one’s whole being to Satguru with utmost faith is Saguna Bhakti. One’s Real Self, the Pure Consciousness beyond the three qualities of nature-Sattvik, Rajasic and Tamasic- is the Nirguna Brahman. Therefore, withdrawing from the perceptible world and coming back to one’s Real Self, the Pure Consciousness is Nirguna Bhakti. The Guru holds a unique place in Indian cuture philosophy, spiritually, religions- Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism-Guru-Tattva is accorded the supreme place.

Some people say it is wrong to worship a man. But if we don’t worship a human being, whom should we worship? Is it more appropriate to worship stones or a void? If we worship stones, they are idols of men only and the void or impersonal, attribute God is just an abstract idea. It is true that many human beings are virtually animals or demons but there also are among men saints, divine beings and Satguru.
